How one faded photograph became the first chapter of a lifetime — and what we learned building it.
There's a photo in my family's collection that used to just sit in a box. Black and white, a little worn at the corners: my mother, twenty-something, holding a newborn — me — just home from Columbia Hospital. Another shows me a few months later, propped up on a couch in a little denim outfit, squinting at whoever was holding the camera.
For decades, those photos were just... photos. Loose, undated in anyone's memory but hers, easy to lose in a move or a flood or simply to time.
